A short term study on vertical distribution of phytoplankton biomass and nutrients in the pelagic zone in Lake Tanganyika Student: Bigeyo Kuboja

چکیده

Phytoplankton are microscopic plants that gain energy from the sun through photosynthesis. They are important primary producers in most lakes. Lake Tanganyika exhibits a greater relative range between annual maximum and minimum phytoplankton biomass than most tropical lakes or temperate Great Lakes (Hecky and Kling, 1981; Hecky and Fee, 1981). This is due in part to the permanent stratification of lake, which can be disrupted by shifts in weather. Upwelling of hypolimnetic nutrients usually follows a change in the depth of the thermocline (e.g. from internal waves), and such shifts in nutrient availability cause differences in species composition and productivity of phytoplankton (Hecky and Kling, 1987).

Relationship between nutrients and phytoplankton biomass based on chlorophyll prediction model in Zribar Lake of Kurdestan, a case study

Zaribar Lake is a little shallow lake in Kurdistan province of Iran and it is faced to eutrophication. The study of phytoplankton biomass-nutrient relations is important in eutrophication management and there are many empirical models to predict phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) based on nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorous) amounts in the lake. Evaluation of these empirical models and compar...

Effects of agriculture, tourism and the dam on eutrophic status of the Zerebar Lake, Iran

The Zerebar Lake is a shallow freshwater lake located in the northwestern Iran. The lake is surrounded by three human activities: agriculture, tourism and dam. The present study aimed to investigate (1) which human activity has the greatest impact on eutrophication of the Zerebar Lake (2) If phytoplankton communities, as the indicator, are correlated with the human activities. Water samples wer...

Indirect and direct effects of fish herbivory on nitrogen cycling in nearshore Lake Tanganyika Student: Brittany Graham Mentor: Peter McInytre

When external loading is small, as it is in Lake Tanganyika, the internal redistribution of nutrients can be important for ecosystem productivity. One conduit for this redistribution is fish. Research has been conducted on the transfer of nutrients into the pelagic or benthic ecosystems by benthic or pelagic fishes, respectively, but less attention has been paid to the recycling of nutrients by...
